Operations — Edit customer info in Shopify
How to update a customer's contact info or shipping address in Shopify, and how to create a discount code.
Source: Coda KB p56.
Update customer contact (email, phone)
- On the right side of the order, click the 3-dot menu beside Customer.
- Select Edit contact information.
- Update the email and / or phone.
- Save.
Only do this with the customer’s explicit verbal or written consent.
Update shipping address
- On the right side of the order, click the 3-dot menu beside Customer.
- Select Edit shipping address.
- Enter the new address. Save.
This works only before the order has been fulfilled. After fulfillment, the address is locked at the carrier.
Create a discount code
- From the Customer info side panel of the order page, select Discounts.
- Top right: click Create discount.
- Pick Amount off order only (third option in the list).
- Either enter a code yourself, or click Generate random code (blue button) — Shopify makes one.
- Set the discount value. No more than 50% without Alex’s approval.
- Scroll to Maximum discount uses:
- Check both boxes.
- Set the limit to 1.
- Set activation and (importantly) deactivation dates if it’s a time-limited offer.
- Review and Save.
When to create a discount code
Get Alex’s approval before creating any discount unless it falls into one of these pre-approved categories:
| Scenario | Allowed without approval? |
|---|---|
| Customer wants the discount from a recent expired promo (within 1 day of promo end) | Yes — issue same value |
| Previously-provided discount code stopped working | Yes — set a time limit on the new one |
| 50% remake fee on a new lens (lens retails > $70) | Yes — but only for lens swap scenarios |
| User-damage 50% replacement discount | Yes — see T-10 for eligibility by SKU |
| Anything > 50% off | NO — Alex approval required |
| Bulk / B2B pricing | NO — route to Sales via wholesale routing |
After creating
- Send the code to the customer with clear language about expiry and usage:
Hi {customer_first_name}, Your discount code is **{CODE}** — good for one use at checkout. {Add expiry note if applicable.} Best, {agent_name} Lucyd Customer Support - Document the code creation in the Shopify order timeline.
